When you are getting ready to quilt your precious quilt there are several decisions to be made. Free-motion quilting or walking foot? All over designs or custom motifs? But possibly the most tricky part of the quilty jigsaw puzzle is choosing what thread to use.
The most obvious thing we think about in relation to thread is colour. After all, quilters are well-known for their colour obsessions! And choosing thread colour for a quilt can be a tough decision. Judi, from Green Fairy Quilts, wrote a blog post on choosing thread colour for a quilt. It describes her thought process and how she laid out each colour to make a final decision. It’s interesting to note that the best choice was not one of Judi’s first picks.
But colour is not the only decision you have to make in regard to thread. You also have to decide what fibre, what weight and what brand, and there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of threads on the market. So how do you choose?
Lori, from The Inbox Jaunt, has a great tutorial on how she chooses her thread for quilting. Lori has a set of questions that she asks herself when she is choosing, like, “Do I want the free motion quilting to show or do I prefer a more subtle texture effect?” It’s a great resource to keep on hand when you are getting a little stumped with all your choices.
You’ve heard the saying, “The quilting makes the quilt.” So it’s worth taking the time to audition your threads, learn about the different weights and fibres, and take your time when choosing thread colour for a quilt, your precious quilt top is worth it!
